For Immediate Release:
This morning at approximately 11:20 a.m., a staff member at Madison County Central School discovered what appeared to be a firearm while helping a 5-year-old Pre-K student locate a paper in their backpack. The staff member immediately notified School Resource Deputies, who responded within 1 minute of notification and took possession of the firearm. The Madison County Sheriff's Office investigators are currently on campus at Madison County Central School and are investigating the situation.
At no time were students or staff in danger, and the firearm was never displayed or handled by the student. Staff followed proper safety protocols, and law enforcement responded quickly to contain the situation immediately upon discovery. Normal school operations have continued without interruption.
This incident serves as an important reminder to all parents and guardians to ensure that firearms and other dangerous items in your home are stored securely and are completely inaccessible to children. Even young children can inadvertently bring dangerous items to school if they are able to access them at home.
We appreciate the vigilance of our staff and the swift response of our School Resource Deputies in keeping our school community safe. Parents with questions or concerns should contact school administration or the Madison County Sheriff's Office.
